Required CE Hours for Renewal
Life Only, Accident & Health, Property, Casualty, and Personal Lines
- Complete a minimum of 24 continuing education (CE) credit hours for the license type during each 2-year license term. Licensees must also complete 3 hours of ethics CE training every license term as a part of the requirements. On and after March 1, 2023, the 3-hour ethics course shall include 1 hour of study on insurance fraud.
- For licensees who hold one or more license types, the 24 hours of CE may be completed in courses applicable for any of the license types held.
Limited Lines Auto
- Complete a minimum of 20 hours of CE each license term, including 3 hours of ethics CE training. On and after March 1, 2023, the three-hour ethics course shall include 1 hour of study on insurance fraud.
Adjuster
- Complete a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education hours each two-year license term, of which 3 hours must be in ethics. On and after March 1, 2023, the three-hour ethics course shall include 1 hour of study on insurance fraud.
Non-Resident
- Existing licenses will be renewed and new licenses can be issued if the home state's requirements are met.

Special Training/Education Requirements

- Revised Ethics Training
- Requires that life agent, and/or accident and health or sickness agent, property broker agent, and/or casualty broker agent to complete 3 hours of ethics training during their two-year license term.
- Effective March 1, 2023, the 3-hour ethics training must include the Department’s 1 hour of study on Agents and Brokers Anti-Fraud Training
Life Only, Accident & Health, Property, Casualty, and Personal Lines
- Additional training requirements are required for the sale of:
- Long Term Care - Accident & Health
- Must complete an 8-hour LTC course prior to soliciting individual consumers for the sale of LTC insurance.
- Newly licensed agents must complete 8 hours of LTC training every year for the first 4 years. Beginning in the 5th year that they are licensed, licensees are required to complete 8 hours of LTC training every 2-year license term.
- Annuity - Life Only
- Must complete an initial 8-hour Annuity training course prior to soliciting individual consumers; thereafter, complete a 4-hour Annuity training course every 2-year license term.
- Homeowner's Insurance Valuation - Property, Casualty, or Personal Lines
- Who has not completed a Homeowners' Insurance Valuation training course must complete one 3-hour training course on homeowners' insurance valuation.
- Advanced Flood Insurance Training
- May satisfy the minimum training and education requirements by completing a 3-hour course related to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) which was approved by CDI’s Producer Licensing Bureau’s Education Section
- 24-Hour Care Coverage
- Complete a 4-hour course, program of instruction, or seminar on workers' compensation and general principles of employer liability, which shall be completed by examination approved by the Commissioner as part of the continuing education course, program of instruction, or seminar prior to selling this coverage.
- 2025 Life Insurance Policies
- Requires life agents, licensed on or after January 1, 2024, who engage in the sale of specified life insurance policies on or after January 1, 2025, to complete a 4 hour life insurance training course before soliciting consumers to sell these life insurance policies (California resident or non-resident)
- 2025 Variable Life Insurance Policies
- Life agents who sell variable life insurance policies must complete 2 hours of topic specific training before each license renewal. This section applies to licenses that are issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2025 (California resident or non-resident)
Non-Resident
- The specific LTC and Annuity requirements must also be met if the licensee solicits individuals for the sale of LTC insurance or Annuity products.

Exemptions
Life-only and/or Accident & Health, Property and/or Casualty, Personal Lines, or Limited Lines Auto
- Any person meeting the following requirements will be exempt from completing continuing education (CE):
- 70 years of age or older; and,
- 30 continuous years as a licensee in good standing in the State of California.
- Any licensee that maintains eligibility for 30 continuous years without any disciplinary action is considered to be in good standing. Eligibility is maintained by renewing a license within one year.
- Does not apply to those individuals licensed for the first time on or after January 1, 2010.

- Begins the date the license is issued and expires the last day of that same calendar month 2 years later. Any additional licenses issued at a later date will expire at the same time as the initial license.

Certificate of Completion
To get your certificate of completion, log in to our website using your username and password. Then, look at the menu on the left and find "Course History." Your course history will list the courses you passed or failed. If you passed a course, you'll see a "Print certificate" button on the right, allowing you to print your certificate for your records.

How are Hours Reported
We report your credits through Sircon, a state-approved third party vendor, within one business day (except holidays, reporting will be done on next business day). The department receives the credits from Sircon and recognizes the date you passed/completed the exam as the date of completion. It is not based upon the day we report the hours to them.

Course Repetition
Courses taken cannot be repeated for credit within a 2-year license period.

Carry-over Hours
Excess hours completed will be credited towards the appropriate license term. Any excess hours accumulated from completing an approved Ethics, Annuity, or LTC course will carry over as a general credit only.
