GA Insurance Continuing Education Requirements

Required CE Hours for Renewal

  • Resident Licensees

    • Less than 20 years of service
      • Complete a minimum of 24 continuing education (CE) credit hours during each license term. Licensees must also complete 3 hours of ethics CE training every license term as a part of the requirements.
    • More than 20 years of service
      • Complete a minimum of 20 continuing education (CE) credit hours during each license term. Licensees must also complete 3 hours of ethics CE training every license term as a part of the requirements.
  • Navigator, Credit Insurance Only & Limited Subagent Only

    • Complete a minimum of 10 continuing education (CE) credit hours during each license term. No ethics CE training required.
    • If you hold a multiple line license where one of the lines is for Credit Insurance, no more than five (5) hours of continuing education credit may be applied for Credit Insurance self-study. The remainder of the continuing education requirement must come from the other lines of insurance held.
    • If you hold a multiple line license where one of the lines is for Limited Subagent, no more than five (5) hours of continuing education credit may be applied for Limited Subagent self-study. The remainder of the continuing education requirement must come from the other lines of insurance held.
  • Workers Compensation Adjuster Only

    • Before conversion to a biennial license
      • Complete a minimum of 10 continuing education (CE) credit hours approved through the State Workers Compensation Board or complete the normal continuing education requirement specifically in the lines of property and casualty. If licensed as a workers' compensation adjuster only, no ethics CE training is required.
    • After conversion to a biennial license
      • Complete a minimum of 20 continuing education (CE) credit hours approved through the Workers Compensation Board or complete the normal continuing education requirement specifically in the lines of property and casualty.
  • Individuals holding the following professional designations: CPCU, CLU, FLMI, CIC, Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS), ChFC, Accredited Advisor in Insurance (AAI), Certified Financial Planner (CFP), or a major BBA in Risk Management and Insurance from an accredited college.

    • Complete a minimum of 12 continuing education (CE) credit hours during each license term. Licensees must also complete 3 hours of ethics CE training every license term as a part of the requirements.
    • If you hold these designations, please submit proof to the GA office.

Special Training/Education Requirements

    For resident broker-agents, these special training requirements shall be part of, and not in addition to, the continuing education requirement.
  • Ethics Training

    • All licensees must complete at least a 3-hour credit ethics training course approved by the Georgia Office of Commisioner of Insurance.
  • Annuity Training

    • A producer who engages in the sale of annuity products shall complete a one-time 4-hour credit annuity best interest 4 training course approved by the Georgia Office of Commisioner of Insurance.
  • Long Term Care Training

    • A producer who engages in the sale of Long Term Care products shall complete a one-time 8-hour credit training course approved by the Georgia Office of Commisioner of Insurance. In addition, the producer must complete a 4-hour credit training course each renewal period thereafter.
    • Resident agents who completed another state's approved long-term care partnership course can get up to 6 hours of credit toward Georgia's training requirement. The resident agent must also complete a 2-hour Georgia-specific Medicaid course to meet the full 8-hour requirement.
  • Flood Insurance Training

    • Insurance producers who sell flood insurance must complete a one-time, 3-hour credit training course on the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). This three (3) hour course can be used toward the Ethics requirement.

Exemptions

  • On approval of the Commissioner

    • Licensees may receive a reduction or exemption from continuing education requirements provided:
      • The organization sponsoring or granting the professional designation requests such exemption in writing setting forth the continuing education requirements for such designation;
      • The holder of such designation provides proof of exemption with the Commissioner on or before the date required for filing continuing education credits;
      • Such exemption or reduction shall only be to the extent of contact hours of continuing education received; and
      • Exemption or reduction claimed under this Section may be subject to verification by the Commissioner.
  • Upon filing the required form

    • On or before the date required for filing continuing education credits with the Commissioner, any licensee may receive a reduction or exemption in continuing education hours required to the extent of the time spent on insurance related activities during the previous year. These activities include, but are not limited to, the following:
      • Teaching courses in insurance-related topics
      • Insurance-related legislative activities
      • Journalism activities involving insurance related topics
      • Projects involving research of insurance laws and regulations
      • Active participation in professional insurance associations. Active members are eligible for a maximum of 3 hours subject to verification from association.
  • Individuals holding a non-resident license

    • Licensees who are required to meet continuing education in their state of residence will be considered in compliance with the continuing education requirements provided the non-resident licensee's home state reciprocates with Georgia licensees in the same manner.
  • Agents holding a non-active license

    • As provided in O.C.G.A 33-23-4(f) and 33-23-18(e), licensees who hold a non-active license are exempt from continuing education requirements provided:
      • The holder of such license files for renewal biennially, on or before the date required.
      • Such exemption shall only be valid during the period the license is non-active.
  • Other Licensees exempt from continuing education requirements:

    • Holders of agent licenses with only travel ticket and/or travel accident classes
    • Temporary agents
    • Foreign military representatives
    • Fraternal agents
    • Title

License Term

  • The Georgia Office of Commisioner of Insurance (OCI) issues insurance licenses for two-year terms.

Course Type Approved for Continuing Education

  • FastrackCE courses are categorized as online self-directed or self-study.

Final Exam

  • The Final Exam is closed-book and requires a monitor/proctor. A monitor/proctor must be a disinterested third party, at least (18) years of age, who has no corporate, employment or personal relationship, or other interest, in the student's performance on the examination.
  • You must receive a score of 70% or better to pass the exam.
  • You will be given the opportunity to retake the exam if a passing score is not received; however, it will be a different set of test questions.

Certificate of Completion

Certificates of completion are available immediately after passing your exam by logging into your account and navigating to your Course History page.

How are Hours Reported

FastrackCE reports your credits the next business day except holidays to Sircon. The state recognizes the date you passed/completed the exam as the date of completion. It is not based upon the day we report the hours to them.

Course Repetition

Courses can only be repeated for continuing education credit if the completion dates are in a different license term.

Carry-over Hours

  • In Georgia, excess continuing education (CE) credit hours can be carried over to the next renewal period, provided that the credit carried forward does not exceed 50% of the biennial CE requirement. However, ethics credit hours are only carried over as general credit.
