IL Insurance Continuing Education Requirements

Required CE Hours for Renewal

  • Resident

    • Each producer shall complete 24 hours of continuing education requirements prior to requesting an extension of an insurance producer license. Three (3) of the 24 hours of continuing education must consist of classroom or webinar Ethics.
    • All CE credits must be banked with the Illinois Department of Insurance (IDOI) at least 10 business days before the renewal date​.
  • Non-Resident

    • Non-resident producers are generally exempt from Illinois-specific CE requirements if they meet their home state’s requirements but must complete all CE requirements one (1) month prior to the renewal date to guarantee eligibility for renewal.
  • Public Adjusters

    • Must complete a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education courses, including 3 hours of classroom or webinar ethics instruction.

Special Training/Education Requirements

  • Ethics Training

    • Minimum of 3 hours required and must be done in a classroom or live webinar environment. No form of online self-study is allowed.
    • FastrackCE does not offer this course format.
  • Annuity Suitability Training

    • An insurance producer who engages in the sale of annuity products shall complete a one-time four (4) hour credit training course approved by the Department and provided by a Department-approved education provider.
    • Individuals who obtain a life insurance line of authority on or after February 1, 2024 may not engage in the sale of annuities until the annuity training course has been completed.
    • An insurance producer who completed an annuity training course approved by the Department before August 1, 2023 shall by February 1, 2024, complete either:
      • A new four (4) credit training course approved by the Department that covers the required topics; or
      • An additional one-time one (1) credit training course approved by the Department and provided by a Department-approved education provider on appropriate sales practices, replacement, and disclosure requirements
    • Producers who have completed a substantially similar course pursuant to Section 3120.60(c) (4) of the Illinois Administrative Code for another State requirement prior to Illinois adopting this rule shall be deemed to satisfy the training requirement in this State. However, Illinois will never have a record of this course and no CE hours will be granted for that course.
    • Non-Resident
      • Producers who satisfies the Suitability Annuity requirements in their State and is substantially similar to the provisions of Section 3120.60(c) (4) of the Illinois Administrative Code shall be deemed to satisfy the training requirements in this State.
  • Flood Insurance

    • Producers involved in flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) must complete 3 hours of flood training. Producers are required to take a specific course entitled, “FEMA-Flood Insurance Requirement”.
    • Resident producers may use this training course for three (3) hours of credit towards their continuing education requirement.
  • Long Term Care Training

    • Resident
      • Producers are required to complete a one-time training course of no less than eight (8) hours.
      • Producers are required to complete ongoing training of no less than four (4) hours and must be completed before each subsequent renewal. Failure to complete subsequent ongoing training prior to license renewal, the producer will have 12 months from that license renewal date to complete the ongoing training without having to complete the 8 hour course again.
      • Resident Producers may also apply the LTC hours to their Continuing education requirements for renewal
    • Non-Resident
      • Producers who have taken a similar LTC Partnership course in any State as outlined in Illinois Administrative Code 2012 shall be deemed to satisfy the training requirements in this State.

Exemptions

  • Producers who have held a license continuously for at least 20 years are exempt from CE requirements, except for mandatory ethics training.
  • Non-resident producers who have completed CE requirements in their home state are exempt from Illinois-specific CE hours.
  • Newly licensed producers are exempt from CE for the first renewal period.
  • Continuing education is not required for limited lines producers.
  • Public Adjusters who (1) are not licensed for one full year prior to the end of the applicable continuing education biennium; or (2) holding nonresident licenses who have met the continuing education requirements of their home state and whose home state gives credit to residents of this State on the same basis.
  • A producer who is unable to comply with license renewal procedures due to military service may request a waiver of those procedures.

License Term

  • Producer licenses in Illinois must be renewed every two years, with all CE hours completed and banked in advance of the renewal.

  • Seminar courses
  • Self-study courses

Final Exam

  • The final exam is not monitored and open book.
  • Must answer at least 70% of the questions correctly to pass.

Certificate of Completion

To get your certificate of completion, log in to our website using your username and password. Then, look at the menu on the left and find "Course History." Your course history will list the courses you passed or failed. If you passed a course, you'll see a "Print certificate" button on the right, allowing you to print your certificate for your records.

How are Hours Reported

We report your credits through SBS, a state-approved third party vendor, within one business day (except holidays, reporting will be done on next business day). The department receives the credits from SBS and recognizes the date you passed/completed the exam as the date of completion. It is not based upon the day we report the hours to them.

Course Repetition

A producer will not be permitted to take a course for credit more than once in a license continuation period.

Carry-over Hours

The producer may accumulate a maximum of 36 credit hours on file with the Department.
